Emerson Newsome enters his third year at Ole Miss after joining the Rebels in July of 2023 after one season as the assistant men’s golf coach with the Washington Huskies.

In year two, Newsome helped guide arguably the best and most decorated Ole Miss team in program history. Ole Miss earned its first No. 1 ranking in program history on October 23, 2024. The team also received its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in program history.

The Rebels finished third at the 2025 NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, in Carlsbad, California. The 3rd place finish marked the best by an Ole Miss team in program history. The Rebels took down the top seeded Arizona State Sun Devils in the quarterfinals of match play for falling to No. 4 Oklahoma State in the semifinals. The Rebels finished 4th in the 1985 Championship which included only four rounds of stroke play. The match play appearance marked the first in program history, with the previous best finish since the format began in 2009 being 14th back in 2022.

Newsome has been vital in the development of 2025 Individual National Champion Michael La Sasso. In year two, Newsome’s guidance helped La Sasso earn PING & Golfweek First Team All-American and First Team All-SEC honors. La Sasso was named a Haskins Award finalist, a Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year finalist and a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist. The Raleigh, North Carolina native tallied a 69.48 scoring average which is the lowest in a single season by a Rebel in program history. La Sasso recorded the third most rounds under-par in single season with 25. His 30 rounds of par or better and 20 rounds in the 60s are the second most in a single season by an Ole Miss Rebel. He was selected to represent Team USA in the 2025 Arnold Palmer Cup, marking the second straight year he will compete for the United States. With his win at the National Championship, La Sasso will compete in the 125th U.S. Open, the 2025 Rocket Classic and the 2026 Masters.

Ole Miss claimed three team titles in 2024-25, the most wins since 2016-17. Michael La Sasso and Tom Fischer both tallied their first individual collegiate wins, and six players finished inside the top five at least once.

The team set a program record for the most team rounds under par in a single season at 26. The team also set a program record for the most team rounds of par or better at 26. The Rebels finished inside the top five nine times, the most since 1984-85.

Fischer, La Sasso, Kye Meeks and Cameron Tankersley all earned PING All-Region Southeast Team honors. Tankersley and La Sasso will compete in the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont. Five players set a career-low 54-hole score in 2024-25 with three players setting a career-low 18-hole score. Four players tallied at least 22 rounds of par or better during the season with five players tallying under par scores in 15 or more rounds.

In his first season in Oxford, Newsome helped guide the Rebels to a program best single-round score of 262 at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate and  its highest seed for an NCAA Regional, with a No. 2 seed to the 2024 NCAA Stanford Regional.

During his tenure at Washington, Newsome helped lead the Huskies to six top-five finishes during the 2022-23 season, including a fifth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships and a trip to the NCAA Auburn Regional as the No. 6 seed.

Before his time in Seattle, Newsome served as assistant men's coach at the University of Central Florida. In 2021-22, Newsome helped lead UCF to an NCAA Tournament berth, as the Golden Knights finished fourth at the American Athletic Conference Championships, earning a spot at the NCAA New Haven Regional.

UCF had four, top-five team finishes in 2021-22, including a victory in the Hartford Hawks Invitational. Individually, Golden Knight golfers combined for nine top-five finishes and 50 rounds under par.

Before beginning his coaching career, Newsome turned professional at the start of 2017 and immediately earned status on the Mackenzie Tour (PGA Tour Canada) and again advanced to U.S Open Sectional qualifying. That same year, he recorded his first professional victory, winning a three-hole, sudden death playoff. Career highlights include a career two-day low of 130 (66-64) to finish second on the Florida Professional Golf Tour and a second-place (tied) finish at the 2018 Toledo Open. Newsome competed in over 75 professional events spanning across two countries and 15 states.

In 2016, Newsome won his U.S. Amateur qualifier by four shots, earning a place in the championship. That same year, he also reached U.S. Open sections and finished in the top 10 at the Dogwood Invitational. He also finished second as an amateur in the 2013 Chattanooga Choo Choo Invitational.

Growing up in Atlanta, Newsome won more than 15 tournaments in various circuits as a junior and earned a scholarship to Cincinnati. A four-year letter-winner for the Bearcats from 2012-16, he was a three-time team captain, and earned medalist honors at the 2013 Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, earning Big East Player of the Week honors. He finished his Bearcat career with nine top-10 finishes.

While at Cincinnati, Newsome was a 2013 Big East All-Academic Team selection, and then earned American Athletic Conference All-Academic honors the following three years, as well as NCAA Academic All-America in 2016. He was on the UC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was included into University of Cincinnati's Legion of Excellence Hall of Fame for posting the highest GPA on the men's golf team.
