OXFORD, Miss. -- Michael Posey, a right-handed pitcher, and infielder Brent Walker, both out of Itawamba Community College, have signed a national letter of intent to attend Ole Miss beginning in the 2000-01 academic year, head coach Pat Harrison announced Tuesday.
Posey, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, posted a 4-3 record last spring with a 1.88 ERA while helping the Indians to the Mississippi state championship and a No. 11 national ranking. He also registered 64 strikeouts in 63.1 innings to earn second team All-State and All-Region 23 honors.
"We're excited that Michael has decided to sign with us," said Harrison. "We feel he is one of the top junior college pitchers in the state. He has great movement on his fastball and is able to locate both his change up and curveball for strikes."
A native of Baton Rouge, La., Posey attended Broadmoor High School where he was selected as a second team All-District pitcher and a first team All-District left fielder.
Walker, 5-10, 185, earned second team All-State honors at shortstop after hitting .343 this past spring with 11 home runs and 53 RBI. He also hit nine doubles and six triples and recorded nine stolen bases.
A native of Brandon, Miss., Walker attended Brandon High School where he was a 1997 All- State selection.
"Brent is an outstanding all-around player and brings solid defensive abilities along with a good right-handed bat," Harrison said. "We think he will be a valuable player for us due to his ability to play several different positions.
"We feel very fortunate to have signed both of these players. They come from a very good junior college program where (ICC Coach) Chuck Box has done an outstanding job."
Posey and Walker are the Rebels' first two signees of the early fall signing period. Ole Miss posted a 34-28 overall record last season and is coming off its first NCAA Regional appearance since 1995.
