OXFORD, Miss. The No. 4 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team will host 12th-ranked Tennessee in the final regular season match Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
The Rebels enter the match with a 17-3 overall record, 9-1 in the SEC and are looking to maintain their lead over Florida heading into the SEC Championships next week. They have already clinched the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament. A win would give the Rebels their second regular season SEC title in four years.
In addition, the Rebels are looking to close out a perfect season at home with a 10-0 record at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. The last time Ole Miss went undefeated at home was back in 1996 when they posted a 9-0 record.
Sophomore James Shortall leads the Rebels with a 33-13 overall record, 11-8 at No. 1 singles. Rebel freshmen Martin Selin and Kristofer Stahlberg continue to dominate the SEC at the bottom two positions boasting a combined record of 24-3 against conference foes.
Tennessee enters the match with a 15-7 overall record, 5-4 in the SEC. The Volunteers are coming off a 4-3 loss to Georgia on Sunday in Athens. Tennessee is led by Peter Handoyo, who is ranked No. 12 in the nation. Handoyo is 1-8 at No. 1 singles, but 10-2 at No. 2 singles.
Ole Miss has won six in a row over the Volunteers including a 4-3 win last year in Knoxville and a 4-1 win in the second round of the SEC Tournament. The last time the two teams played in Oxford, the Rebels won 7-0.
Prior to the match, the Rebels will dedicate a new pavilion at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in honor of alumni William and Susanne Galtney, of Houston, Texas. Galtney played for the Rebel tennis team in the early 70s.
