JACKSON, Miss. -- Ole Miss sophomore Martin Sjoqvist dropped a 6-2, 6-3, decision to Mississippi State's Jeremy Bayon in the final of the Mississippi Intercollegiate Sunday at River Hills Club.

Bayon broke Sjoqvist in the fifth and seventh games of the first set to take a one set to love lead. The two traded breaks in the second set, but then Bayon broke to go ahead 4-3. He held serve and had Sjoqvist 15-40 in the deciding game but, Sjoqvist fought off three match points before losing.

It marks the first time in four years, that Ole Miss has not won a title at the Mississippi Intercollegiate. The Rebels had three of the four semifinalists in the singles and two doubles teams in the semifinals.

Freshman Sebastien Lami made the semifinals before falling to Bayon in three sets, while sophomore Vikrant Chada lost to Sjoqvist in the semifinals. Chada posted a big win in the tournament, knocking off MSU's Simon Larose in the quarterfinals. Larose, who may be one of the top two for the Bulldogs this year, ended the 1997 season ranked No. 36 in the nation.

In doubles, Sjoqvist teamed with Vicksburg's Barry Hassell to reach the semifinals, but the two lost to the eventual champions, Bayon and Larose. Chada and Lami were beaten in the semifinals by Dirk Reinhardt and Andreas Tiltscher of Southern Mississippi.
