PRINCETON, N.J. - Sebastien DeChaunac of the Ole Miss men's tennis team has been named to the 1998 Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team, which will be honored by Rolex, Tennis Magazine and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Friday, August 28, at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, N.Y.
The ITA and Tennis Magazine selected the 14th edition of the Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team, which includes the nation's top-ranked men's and women's tennis players at the NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges as well as the winners of the 1998 Rolex National Indoor Championships.
DeChaunac was named to the team by virtue of finishing No. 3 in the final Rolex singles rankings. The junior from Aix-en-Provence, France, earned All-America honors for the second straight year and was an All-SEC first team selection. He led the Rebels to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships and a final national ranking of No. 6.
Off the court, DeChaunac was named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team, the SEC Honor Roll, and the Chancellor's Honor Roll. He completed the spring semester with a perfect 4.0 grade point average in Economics.
DeChaunac becomes the third Rebel in the history of the program to make the Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team. Former All-Americans Mahesh Bhupathi and Ali Hamadeh made the team in 1995 as NCAA Doubles Champions.
The Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team will be treated by Rolex Watch USA and Tennis Magazine to a weekend in New York, highlighted by Friday's activities at the West Side Tennis Club. The Rolex All-Stars will then be honored at a special luncheon and presented their awards by tennis legend Stan Smith, a former U.S. Open and Wimbledon champion.
The ITA and Tennis Magazine have selected a Collegiate All-Star Team since 1984. Players honored in the past include: Todd Martin, Mikael Pernfors, MaliVai Washington, Richy Reneberg, Luke Jensen and Justin Gimelstob.
