OXFORD, Miss. The No. 8 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team downed South Florida 6-1 Tuesday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center to win its seventh match in a row and improve to 12-2 on the year. South Florida drops to 11-4 overall.
"This was a very solid South Florida team," Head Coach Billy Chadwick said. "Today was the first outdoor match that we've played in two weeks and it should definitely help in our preparation for our upcoming match with Florida."
Ole Miss won the opening doubles point, sweeping all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Sebastien DeChaunac and James Shortall downed Mat Guyaux and Nick Parker 8-3 and then Martin Sjoqvist and Anders Stenman took out Boris Babic and Aleks Popovic 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, DeChaunac gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Fabio Tintori at the top spot. Sjoqvist dominated Guyaux 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for a 3-0 Ole Miss lead. Lami lost the first set in his match to Babic at No. 2 singles, but proved too much in the second and third sets winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the win for Ole Miss. It marked the second match in a row, that Lami clinched the victory.
Chada held off Popovic 7-5, 7-5 and Shortall won in three sets over Jay Shah 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 for the final two points. Chada has won seven in a row and nine of his last 10 matches. The only victory South Florida on the day came at No. 4 singles, where Nistor defeated Stenman 6-4, 6-3.
The Rebels will now get ready to face Florida in Gainesville Saturday at 12:00 p.m., before returning home to host LSU on March 25.
