Rebel Netters No. 6 in First Spring Ranking

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team is ranked No. 6 in the first team ranking of the spring, while four players are among the top 100 in the nation in the individual ITA Collegiate rankings, released Tuesday.

The Rebels are No. 6 behind UCLA, Illinois, Stanford, Duke and Georgia. Baylor, Texas, Washington and SMU round out the top 10. Other SEC schools in the top 25 include South Carolina (11th), Tennessee (15th), Mississippi State (t17th), Florida (t17th), LSU (20th) and Kentucky (21st).

In singles, sophomore James Shortall moved up 19 spots to No. 22. He is currently 27-9 on the year. Freshman Martin Selin made it into the top 50 at No. 49. He has a 17-9 overall record, 6-3 in dual matches.

Anders Stenman is ranked No. 67 and Martin Sjoqvist moved up to 75th to round out the Rebel contingent. Sjoqvist is 6-2 in dual matches.

In doubles, Rebel netters Shortall and Sjoqvist jumped from No. 48 into the top 10 at No. 6 after posting several excellent wins over top 10 opponents at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor. The two are 11-1 and have won 10 in a row. Their last loss came in the finals of the SEC Indoor Championships on Jan. 25.

The team ranking was voted on by the national ranking committee for this period, while the individual rankings were based on the ITA's computer points per match formula.
