PHOENIX, Ariz. - Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder and former Ole Miss All-America David Dellucci underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to repair the wrist injury that will keep him out of action for the remainder of the 1999 season.
The procedure which took more than two hours, was performed by Dr. Don Sheridan in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"David's surgery went very well," Dr. Sheridan said. "He tolerated the procedure without any complications. The technical aspects of the procedure went very well, and David is now resting comfortably.
"He has a long rehabilitation period in front of him, and we're optimistic about his chances to return to baseball. If anyone can overcome a problem like this, David can."
Dellucci, who was hitting .394 in 63 games this season, was diagnosed with Kienbock's disease late last week. The ailment prevented blood from reaching one of the small bones in his left wrist.
He will remain hospitalized overnight before traveling to his Baton Rouge, La., home for a rest-and-recuperation visit of up to two weeks.
