OXFORD, Miss. - Senior guard Becky Myatt recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Ole Miss women's basketball team to a 69-54 win over Arkansas State Thursday at Tad Smith Coliseum. It marked the 13th consecutive non-conference home win, dating back to Nov. 22, 1998.
Myatt went 5-of-12 on the night, including three three-pointers. She now needs seven threes to become the all-time leader at Ole Miss. Myatt's 10 rebounds are a career-high. Junior Von Kirk scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and Tywanna Inmon scored 12 points in the Lady Rebel victory.
Ole Miss led throughout the game and their largest lead was 17 with 31 seconds remaining. Arkansas State cut the Ole Miss lead to three (40-37) at the 15:27 of the second half, then the Lady Rebels went on a 15-8 run to increase their lead to 15 at the 5:41 mark.
The Lady Indians cut it to nine with 2:24 left on a three-pointer by Casie Lowman. Chandra Dorsey nailed a three to put the Lady Rebels back up by 12 and Ole Miss made four free throws in the final minute to finish off the win.
"Arkansas State has a very good team with solid players," head coach Ron Aldy said. "Keeshia Evans hit some big shots for them. It's nice to get a win even though we didn't play our best game. We can learn >from our lack of execution offensively and get better. Free throws and rebounds were the big difference in the game."
The Lady Rebels shot 44 percent for the game while the Lady Indians shot 40 percent on the night. Ole Miss out-rebounded Arkansas State 43-28. The Lady Rebels shot 17-of-28 from the charity stripe, while the Lady Indians were 0-of-2 from the free throw line.
Ole Miss will host Northern Arizona at 2 p.m. on Sunday before heading off to California for the Beach Classic. The Lady Rebels will face Wichita State in the first round of the tournament.
