NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In a game decided by runs and free throws, the Ole Miss Lady Rebel women's basketball team came up short in a 59-51 loss to the Vanderbilt Lady Commodores on Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
After holding Vanderbilt (17-8, 5-5 SEC) to only a three point half time lead, the Lady Commodores came out on fire in the second half. The Lady Rebels (11-12, 0-10 SEC) fell behind by 13, but went on a 15-2 run to tie the game at 36-36 with 10:35 remaining. The Vanderbilt Lady Commodores then answered with a 16-4 run of their own to go up 52-40 with 3:19 remaining in the game.
Despite making five-of-six free throws to end the game, Vanderbilt made seven-of-eight free throws to seal the eight point victory.
"Vanderbilt hit their free throws down the stretch, which took away any chance we had of coming back," said Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy. "If they had stumbled a bit at the end, we may have been able to come back on them, but to their credit, they made the plays when they needed them."
Leading the way for the Lady Rebels was senior Frankie Boyd, with a game-high 18 points, all of which came in the second half. She played only 16 minutes in the game, after picking up two fouls early in the first half.
"I think Frankie was a little absent-minded in the first half, but to her credit, she came out to play in the second half," said Aldy.
Also scoring in double-digits was junior Stephanie Murphy with 13 points. Four Lady Commodores finished in double-digits, led by Changelle Anderson with 14 points and six rebounds.
Defensively, the Lady Rebels continued to dominate their opponents on the boards, 37-35, including 20 offensive rebounds. Ole Miss was led by Shayla Day with seven rebounds and Sinissia Wysinger with six.
The Lady Rebels continue their three-game road trip in Gainesville, Fla., where Ole Miss will take on the Florida Lady Gators on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
