Lyons Twins Shut Down South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. - Sophomore Nathan Lyons allowed one run on three hits in seven innings of work, and Carl Lafferty had three RBIs as Ole Miss defeated South Alabama 6-2 Saturday afternoon at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala. With the win, the Rebels evened the three-game series at a victory a piece.
Lyons (2-1) also struck out four in earning the win.
Lafferty put Ole Miss up 2-1 in the second with a two-run home run, his first of the season. He then hit a sacrifice fly to right in the third, scoring Jude Voltz to make it 3-1.
The Rebels (7-2) broke the game open in the sixth with three runs. Clint Farrar had a two-run double and Voltz followed with a single to score Farrar and give Ole Miss a 6-1 lead.
Lafferty, Nugen and Voltz recorded two hits each as the Rebels out-hit the Jaguars 12-5
South Alabama (4-4) scored a run in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-2 and had the bases loaded with one out, however, reliever Joel Lyons coaxed Tim Merritt to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Joel Lyons, a redshrit freshman, pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in marking the first time the twin brothers from Kennett, Mo., have appeared in the same game.
Eric Janecek (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings.
The two teams will meet in the rubber-match tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
