Justin Huisman broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning with a RBI double and then pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his third save of the year and lift Ole Miss to a 3-2 win over South Alabama Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field. With the win, the Rebels won the three-game series 2-1 from the Jaguars.
Chad Hill opened the ninth with a double to left center and then advanced to third on Banks Robinson's ground out to second. Huisman then followed with his game-winning double.
South Alabama put the tying and game-winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Kyle Stanky hit a two-out single, and Scott Calahan drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Huisman then coaxed Tim Merritt to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Joey Cramblitt (3-0) pitched eight innings in earning the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits and no walks.
Daniel Head (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing one run on three hits in three innings of relief work.
South Alabama starter Layne Meyer went six innings and held the Rebels to two runs on six hits and two walks, and struck out eight.
Both teams recorded nine hits each.
South Alabama (4-5) got an unearned run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. A throwing error by second baseman Sim Shanks on a potential double play grounder by Brian Groom loaded the bases for the Jaguars. Tony Piccotti then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Scott Calahan, who reached on a single to center.
The Rebels (8-2) took the lead in the fourth with two runs. Jude Voltz reached base on a wild pitch after striking out. A batter later, Glen Morris hit his first home run of the year to give Ole Miss a 2-1 lead. The Jaguars, though, would even the game in the bottom half of the inning on Brett Parker's two-out, RBI single that singled Craig Remos from second and the game remained tied until Huisman's double in the ninth.
