Tennessee Rolls Past Ole Miss Again 8-2

OXFORD, Miss. - Brian Gates allowed two runs over eight and one-third innings, and Jeff Christensen drove in two runs with three hits as Tennessee won its second straight game against Ole Miss, 8-2, Saturday night.
Gates held the Rebels (13-8, 2-3 SEC) to six hits, while striking out five to improve to 4-1 on the season. He was chased out in the ninth after a Carl Lafferty two-run single broke up the shutout. Joe Bertolino struck out the final two batters to end the game.
The Volunteers (21-6, 3-2 SEC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Jeff Baumtrog drove in two with a single to right field. UT tacked on another run in the third with a Christensen RBI-single to put Tennessee up 3-0. The Vols got one run in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth.
Ole Miss starter Ronnie Goodwin was lifted after the third inning. Goodwin (0-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing three runs over three innings.
Brett Young replaced Goodwin and pitched five-plus innings, matching his longest career appearance. Young gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out four. Joel Lyons pitched the ninth for the Rebels, surrendering one hit with one strike out.
The final game of the weekend series will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Oxford-University/Swayze Field.
