LEXINGTON, Ky. - Vince Harrison's bases loaded single in the bottom of the 11th inning gave Kentucky a 6-5 win over Ole Miss in the opening game of a three-game Southeastern Conference series Friday night.
The Rebels (16-12, 4-5 SEC) rallied from a 5-2 deficit, scoring three runs in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5, but couldn't cash in on scoring opportunities in the ninth and 10th innings. Ole Miss had runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, and had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th, but Wildcat reliever Jon Hooker was able to get Kentucky (23-5, 4-5 SEC) out of trouble both times.
Hooker (2-1) pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on four hits to earn the win.
Aaron McGlone reached base on a error by shortstop Justin Huisman to start the 11th. John Wilson followed with a double to advance McGlone to third, forcing the Rebels to intentionally walk Robert Newton and load the bases. Harrison then followed with his game-winning hit.
Burney Hutchinson went 3-for-5 with two HRs and three RBI to lead Ole Miss as the Rebels out-hit Kentucky 12-8. Hutchinson hit a solo shot in the first to put Ole Miss up 1-0, and later added a two-run homer in the eighth, capping a three-run inning to tie the game at 5-5. The home runs were the first of the year for Hutchinson.
Chad Hill, Huisman and Banks Robinson also had two hits each for the Rebels, and Jude Voltz went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Newton and Wilson both had two hits for the Wildcats. Newton also hit his fifth home run of the year, a three-run shot in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.
Ronnie Goodwin (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing one unearned run on two hits.
Ole Miss starter Jeff McAvoy went nine innings, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk, and tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts in taking a no decision.
The two teams will meet in game two tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Freshman right-hander Brett Young is scheduled to start for Ole Miss, against Kentucky right-hander Scott Wade.
