Men's Golfers In Fourth Place At NCAA Central Regional

VICTORIA, Texas -- The Ole Miss men's golf team fired an opening-round 289 Thursday to place fourth after 18 holes of the NCAA Central Regional at the Victoria Country Club.

Houston and SMU are tied for the team lead after one round with a one-over-par 285, while Ole Miss sits four strokes back. The first-round individual leader is Chris Chesson of Louisiana-Lafayette with a 68.

The Rebels, who are making their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, were led in the first round by Troy Muller. The junior from Braithwaite, La., is tied for fifth with a two-under-par 70.

Also for Ole Miss, senior Jon Bartlett shot an even-par 72 to tie for 24th. Freshman Andrew Medley is tied for 38th with a 73, and Junior Phil Caravia is tied for 51st with a 74. Chris Malloy posted a day-one 76.

Second-round action of the regional is Friday with the tournament wrapping up on Saturday. A minimum of eight teams from the regional will advance to the championship finals, to be held May 31-June 3 at the Grand National Golf Complex in Opelika, Ala.
