The Lady Rebels fouled Vice, and she made both free throws to give the Crimson Tide a three-point lead with12 seconds remaining. Ole Miss had one final chance to tie the game and send it in to overtime, but missed a three as time ran out.
"In my 33 years of coaching, I have never seen a call like that at the end of a game that has had a direct impact in the outcome,? head coach Ron Aldy said. ?What I said, ?was what does Becky (Myatt) have to do to get a charge called on her when the girl bowls over her? and the official called the technical.?
The game was tight in the early going, as Alabama led by four (30-26) at halftime. They pushed it out to 51-43 at the 8:00 minute mark of the second half on a three-pointer by Vice. The Lady Rebels stayed close the rest of the way until freshman Tywanna Inmon?s three with 3:33 left pulled Ole Miss within one (58-57).
Vice hit her second three to put the Crimson Tide back up by four and then back-to-back layups by Saundra Jackson and Sherika Wright tied the game. Alabama's Shondra Johnson answered with a layup at the other end before the technical foul and ensuing free throws.
Huntsville, Ala., native Von Kirk led Ole Miss with 18 points, one shy of her career-high, on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and four three-pointers. Becky Myatt added 13 points and TaShondrea Moton of Prattville, Ala., chipped in 11 points and six rebounds. "Von and TaShondrea, being from Alabama, played as hard as they could to help the team win. We just dug ourselves a hole early in the game with our inconsistent play. We challenged our team to see if we can rebound >from this loss and come away with a win Thursday in Starkville. ?
Alabama's LaNisha Cartwell led all scorers with 19 points. Vice added 15 and Johnson scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Ole Miss will hit the road to face arch-rival Mississippi State Thursday. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Humphrey Coliseum.
