OXFORD, Miss. - ,,Senior guard Sherika Wright scored 17 points and dished out five assists to lead the Ole Miss women's basketball team to a 78-58 win over visiting Murray State Monday night at Tad Smith Coliseum.
Ole Miss (1-1) jumped out to a 17-point lead (27-10) led by Wright, who scored nine of her 17 points in the first half. Murray State (1-1) went on a 18-7 run beginning at the 5:50 minute mark, on four three-pointers, to close within six (34-28) at the break.
Murray State hung tight in the beginning of the second half and even held the lead at 44- 43 with 11:55 to go in the game. Ole Miss responded using a 21-8 run to open up a 65-51 lead. The Lady Rebels never looked back, going on for the 20-point win.
"We had good spurts early in the first half," head coach Ron Aldy said. "We tried to play a lot of people and had a lapse midway through the first half. Murray State showed a lot of hustle and improvement from last year. In the second half, some of our seniors stepped up and showed their veteran leadership."
"We played with much better intensity tonight," Wright said. "Murray State pushed us, but we had a total team effort. We were able to come away with the win."
Sophomore Tywanna Inmon scored 13 points and six rebounds, while also grabbing five steals in the win for Ole Miss. The Lady Rebels shot 42.4 percent for the game and 70.4 percent from the charity stripe.
Stacy Holmes led the Lady Racers with 14 points including three three-pointers. Brittany Park finished with 11, also knocking down three threes. Murray State was held to 29.4 percent from the floor and hit 55.6 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Rebels travel to Bozeman, Mt., for Thanksgiving to participate in the Gran Tree Inn Classic hosted by Montana State. Their first round opponent will be Montana State Friday at 8 p.m. CT.
