OXFORD, Miss. - Lance Jones' bases loaded walk in the fifth inning to score Matt Tolbert was the only run scored as Ole Miss edged Southeast Missouri State, 1-0, on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The game was the first of a three-game weekend series. The Rebels (5-1) and Indians (3-1) will play a doubleheader Sunday starting at 12:30 p.m. The first game is scheduled to be a nine-inning contest, followed by a seven-inning game in the nightcap.
After Tolbert reached on a one-out single in the fifth, A.J. Cochet reached on a error. Thomas then struck out Chad Sterbens for the second out of the inning but then issued back-to-back walks to Kris Cox and Jones to score Tolbert.
Ole Miss starter Pete Montrenes (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings to run his streak to 12 consecutive scoreless innings. He allowed only three hits and two walks, and recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts.
Junior left-hander Nathan Lyons pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the year.
SEMO starter Tommy Thomas (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just one unearned run on two hits and four walks in five innings of work
Clemente Bonilla went 2-for-4 for the Indians as SEMO out-hit the Rebels 5-3.
Saturday's game marked the Ole Miss pitching staff's second consecutive shutout after blanking SE Louisiana, 9-0, in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday. As a pitching staff, the Rebels have a streak of 18 straight scoreless innings dating back to the final two innings of game one in Wednesday's twinbill.
The 1-0 game was the 47th in Ole Miss baseball history dating back to 1893. The Rebels are 22-25 all-time in 1-0 games.
