OXFORD, Miss. - Freshman right-hander Adam Yates tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings as Ole Miss shutout Austin Peay 4-0 in a game that was called in the top of the eighth after heavy rain.
The Governors scored two runs in the eighth and had the bases loaded with one out before weather stopped play. After a 42-minute delay, the game was called due to inclement field conditions and the score was reverted back to the last full inning of play, giving Ole Miss the 4-0 win.
Yates (2-0) allowed four hits and walked three, while striking out a season-high five to earn the win.
The shutout is the Rebels' third in their last five games.
Six different Ole Miss players recorded a hit as the Rebels out-hit the Governors 6-4.
Josh Christian was 1-for-2 with two RBI and his sac-fly in the first to score Clint Farrar gave Ole Miss a 1-0 lead. Carl Lafferty then followed with a RBI single to score Burney Hutchinson to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Ole Miss also added a run in the third and in the fifth inning.
Dustin Smith (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Ole Miss will next travel to Ruston, La., to open a three-game series with Louisiana Tech Friday at 6:30 p.m. The series will be the Rebels' first road games of the year.
