OXFORD, Miss. - Two Ole Miss errors led to five unearned Kentucky runs in the sixth inning as the Wildcats defeated the Rebels 6-0 Friday night in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.
The win was the fifth straight for Kentucky (7-7, 1-0 SEC), while the loss snapped a four-game win streak for Ole Miss (13-4, 0-1 SEC).
Wildcat starter Scott Wade (2-2) fired a complete-game three hitter, while striking out six and walking one to earn the win. He allowed only one Rebel base runner to reach second base, and after allowing a one-out single to Lance Jones in the first, Wade did not allow another Ole Miss hit until the seventh.
Ole Miss starter Pete Montrenes (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing six runs, only one earned, on nine hits and one walk in eight innings. He also registered six strikeouts.
Caleb Brock went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Seth Morris also collected two hits as Kentucky out-hit Ole Miss 9-3.
Kentucky took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Vince Harrison scored on a Morris double.
Beau Moore started the Wildcats' five-run sixth with a one-out infield single to first and was awarded second on Josh Christian's throwing error. Harrison then reached safely on a fielder's choice and Morris hit an infield single to load the bases.
Spencer Preston followed with a pop up near the third base line, where Lance Jones and Chad Sterbens collided, allowing Moore to score and make it 2-0. Jeff Tolotti then drew a bases loaded walk to force home the Wildcats' third run of the game. After Tyler Gordon's RBI ground out, Brock capped the five-run inning with a two-run single to put the Wildcats up 6-0.
The two teams will play game two of their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
