BATON ROUGE, La. - Freshman right-hander Lane Mestepey overcame four errors by his defense to improve to 7-0 as No. 2 LSU defeated No. 18 Ole Miss, 6-3, Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium, in the rubber-match of the three-game Southeastern Conference series between the two conference leaders.

The win placed the Tigers, 27-11-1, 12-6 SEC, back into first place in the overall SEC standings, a game ahead of the Rebels, 27-12-1, 11-7 SEC.

Mestepey pitched a complete game, scattering nine hits and allowing three runs, two earned, while walking none and striking out two.

"Mestepey was fabulous for them today," Ole Miss first-year head coach Mike Bianco said. "He's a great pitcher and as a true freshman did a great job in a game where two teams were competing for first-place in the SEC."

Mike Heath broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run home run in the sixth. The home run was Heath's sixth of the season. LSU later added an insurance run in the ninth.

Senior right-hander Dan McShea (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out a season-high six in 7 2/3 innings. The start for McShea was his first on a SEC weekend since 1999 after he missed all of the 2000 season because of surgery on his right shoulder.

Ryan Theriot and Todd Linden recorded two hits each as LSU out-hit Ole Miss 10-9. Linden also hit his 10th home run of the season with a lead-off shot to right in the second to put the Tigers up 2-0.

Burney Hutchinson and Lance Jones had two hits apiece for the Rebels. Jones led-off the fourth with his sixth round-tripper of the year to spark a three-run fourth as Ole Miss took a 3-2 lead.

Sunday's game was the final of a season-long seven-game road swing for Ole Miss. The Rebels finished the swing with a 3-4 mark. Ole Miss will next begin a six-game homestand Wednesday night against Arkansas State in a non-conference game at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The Rebels will then host Florida in a three-game SEC series starting Friday at 6:30 p.m.
