Rebels Fall to Arkansas in Softball Doubleheader

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? - The Ole Miss softball team dropped a pair of pitchers' duels to Arkansas, 2-1 and 2-0, Wednesday at the Lady `Back Yard. The finale of the three-game series is Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT).
The Rebels (17-33, 4-16 SEC) struck first in game one, plating a run in the third inning. With two outs, Rachel Davenport doubled to deep left field, and Jamie Cummings followed with an RBI-single to put Ole Miss ahead 1-0. Cummings, a senior from Jackson, Miss., batted 4-for-7 in the twin bill.
The Lady Razorbacks (29-24, 11-12 SEC) answered with the tying run in the bottom of the third, and the game would remain knotted at 1-1 until the eighth, when a two-out, bases loaded single by Jennifer Bottoms drove home the game-winning run.
Jennifer Hughes (9-12) took the loss despite relinquishing only one earned run on six hits over seven innings. Rachel Talley (9-13) also surrendered seven hits in the UA win.
In the late game, Arkansas picked up solo home runs by Danica Howlett in the fourth and Julie Young in the sixth, and Heather Schlichtman made it stand.
Schlichtman (20-11) scattered five Rebel hits and struck out eight in the shutout. Lindsay Price (5-9) allowed six hits in the complete-game loss.
