Men's Tennis Player Reaches Round of 16

OXFORD, Miss. - Eight of the top 16 seeds remain in the NCAA Singles Championships, and Alex Hartman of the Ole Miss men's tennis team is one of them. He advanced to the round of 16 Friday, by defeating DePaul's Jeugenij Cario in straight sets.

Hartman, already an All-American by virtue of being seeded, also earned the honor for reaching the round of 16. He is the lone representative from the state of Mississippi left in the tournament, as top-seeded Marco Baron of Mississippi State lost his second round match.

An All-SEC selection, Hartman defeated Cario 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round, where he will face Steve Berke of Yale. Berke upset the No. 5 seed Genius Chidziwke of SMU 6-2, 6-2 to set up the meeting. There will be two rounds of singles played Saturday, the round of 16 and the quarterfinals.

Hartman is trying to become the third Rebel in a row to reach at least the quarterfinals in the NCAA individual championships. James Shortall and Vikrant Chadha reached the doubles final four last year.

In doubles, Shortall and Kristofer Stahlberg lost in the first round to Trace Fielding and Jimmy Haney of TCU in a close three-set match. The Rebel duo won the first set 7-5, but lost the next two by the same score. For the NCAA doubles championships, they use the traditional best of three format rather than the eight-game pro set used in team matches. Shortall and Stahlberg end the season at 16-6.
