REVIEW NOTES
OLE MISS CONCLUDES FIRST SEASON UNDER BIANCO: The 2001 season was the Rebels' first under head coach Mike Bianco. A former player and assistant coach under the legendary Skip Bertman at LSU, Bianco guided Ole Miss to one of the best seasons in school history with a 39-23-1 record and an appearance in the NCAA Regionals. He was named the Rebels' skipper on June 7, 2000 after three seasons as the head coach of McNeese State (1998-2000), compiling a 100-71 mark with the Cowboys that included Southland Conference championship and an NCAA Regional berth in 2000. Bianco's four-year career record now stands at 139-94-1.
REBELS EARN THIRD NCAA BERTH SINCE 1995: With Ole Miss' at-large berth in the 2001 NCAA Tournament, the Rebels made their third trip to the NCAAs since 1995, and their second in three years. Ole Miss was the No. 2 seed in the four-team New Orleans Regional, hosted by Tulane University at Turchin Stadium, along with the top seeded and host Green Wave, No. 3 seed Oklahoma State and No. 4 seed Southern University-Baton Rouge.
NCAA REGIONAL TIDBITS: Ole Miss went 1-2 at the New Orleans Regional, losing 5-4 in 10 innings to Oklahoma State, beating Southern University-Baton Rouge, 10-2, and then falling 16-7 to the Cowboys in an elimination game ... Ole Miss is now 20-10 all-time in NCAA Regional play ... The 5-4 loss to the Cowboys marked the Rebels' fourth straight loss to open a regional ... The 10-inning game with the Cowboys marked the Rebels' third-ever postseason extra-inning game, including the SEC Tournament, NCAA Regionals and College World Series ... Ole Miss is 1-2 in postseason extra-inning games.
GOODWIN DOMINATES JAGUARS: Senior RHP Ronnie Goodwin turned in one of the best postseason appearances in school history against Southern University-Baton Rouge on May 26 in the New Orleans Regional. He carried a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning against the Jaguars before Southern scored two unearned runs in the ninth. Goodwin finished with a complete-game three hitter, allowing the two unearned runs while striking out seven and walking one in the Rebels' 10-2 victory.
REBELS FALL SHY OF RECORD WIN TOTAL: Ole Miss' 39 wins in 2001 was one shy of the school record 40 set by the 1995 team. The 1995 squad finished 40-22 that season for the school's only 40-win season and advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Atlantic I Regional, hosted by Florida State. The 39 victories ties the 1977 team for the second-highest win total in school history. The 1977 Rebels finished at 39-19 under head coach Jake Gibbs.
IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss spent 10 weeks ranked in one of the three major college baseball polls, achieving a ranking as high as No. 9 in the April 30 Collegiate Baseball Top 30. The No. 9 ranking was the Rebels' highest - and their first top 10 rating - since finishing 1972 season at No. 8 in the final Collegiate Baseball poll. The following chart shows the Rebels' week-by-week rankings in the three major college baseball polls:
Date BA CB BW/ESPNMarch 5 -- 29 --March 12 -- -- --March 19 21 19 24March 26 19 16 17April 2 16 20 16April 9 18 22 22April 16 18 15 22April 23 15 10 22April 30 15 9 21May 7 22 20 23May 14 -- 23 --May 21 -- 23 --HUTCHINSON CLIMBING CAREER CHARTS AT OLE MISS: OF Burney Hutchinson ended his third year at Ole Miss ranked in the top 10 in five offensive career categories at Ole Miss. He's tied for sixth in career home runs, 27, and triples, 11, seventh in runs scored with 132, tied for seventh in walks with 99, and is tied for ninth in RBIs at 125. He will enter his senior season three triples shy of tying the Ole Miss all-time record of 14 held by Kevin Kessinger (1989-1992) and Nate Riddley (1989-1992) (see the updated record book at the end of this release).

HUTCHINSON SETS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR RUNS SCORED: With 69 runs scored in 63 games this season, junior OF Burney Hutchinson eclipsed current Arizona Diamondback David Dellucci's school single-season record of 67 set in 1995. Hutchinson scored at least one run in 44-of-63 games this season, including a career-high four in the final game of the season against Oklahoma State on May 26 in the New Orleans Regional (see the updated record book at the end of this release).
MONTRENES JOINS PRICE IN ELITE COMPANY: With 10 wins and 107 strikeouts this season, junior RHP Pete Montrenes joins former Ole Miss All-American Jamey Price as the only two pitchers in school history to register at least 10 wins and 100 strikeouts in a season. Montrenes' 10 wins was one shy of the school single-season record of 11 set by Price, in 1995, and Rick Zibilich in 1977. The 107 strikeouts was the second-highest single-season total in Ole Miss history, 11 shy of Price's record of 118 in 1995 (see the updated record book at the end of this release).
FOUR REBELS EARN ALL-SEC HONORS, HUTCHINSON NAMED TO FIRST TEAM: Ole Miss placed four players on the 2001 All-Southeastern Conference team, highlighted by junior OF Burney Hutchinson's selection to the first team. The team was selected by a vote of the conference's 12 head coaches. Earning second team All-SEC honors were junior DH Josh Christian, senior C Carl Lafferty and junior RHP Pete Montrenes. The four players selected was the most by Ole Miss since having four players named to the All-SEC team in 1964. Ole Miss did have four players selected to the All-SEC Western Division team in 1983 when the conference had both an All-SEC West and All-SEC East Division team, however, only three were named to the All-SEC team.
REBELS RECORD HIGHEST FINISH SINCE 1986: With a 17-13 SEC record, Ole Miss tied Mississippi State for second-place in the SEC Western Division and finished in a fourth-place tie in the overall conference standings. The fourth-place finish is the highest by the Rebels since tying for fourth in the conference standings in 1986. NOTE: From 1986-1991, the SEC did not use divisions until the conference went to its current divisional format when Arkansas and South Carolina joined the SEC in 1992.
OLE MISS TIES RECORD FOR SEC WINS: The Rebels' 17 conference wins this season tied the school record for the most SEC wins in a season, set by the 1999 squad that also went 17-13. Prior to 1999, the school record for SEC wins in a season was 15 by the 1972, 1977 and 1982 teams.
OLE MISS RECORDS FOURTH STRAIGHT 30-WIN CAMPAIGN: Ole Miss' 4-0 win over Florida on April 22 in Oxford was the Rebels' 30th win of the season to give them four straight 30-win seasons for the first time in school history. The 38 victories heading into this weekend's New Orleans Regional is the most during that span.
THROUGH THE TURNSTILES: Ole Miss set a new school record for total home attendance this season with 58,929 in 31 dates - an average of 1,900 per game. The previous record was 58,686 set by the 1995 team in 34 home games. The three-day attendance of 14,372 for the Mississippi State series, May 11-13, ranks as the second-largest for a three-game series at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field since the facility opened in 1989. The Rebels drew the third and fourth largest crowds, respectively, in the stadium's history when 5,364 watched the Saturday, May 12 game, and 5,137 saw the Friday May 11 contest.
PITCHING STAFF LEAVES ITS MARK: The 2001 Rebel pitching staff became the first in school history to record over 400 strikeouts in a season as Ole Miss registered 418 in 63 games this season, eclipsing the previous mark of 389 set by the 1995 and 1999 teams. Junior RHP Pete Montrenes led the staff with 107 strikeouts, the second-highest single-season total in school history. The record is 118 set by Jamey Price in 1995. The six shutouts recorded by Ole Miss hurlers this year was one shy of the school single-season record of seven set in 1964.
YATES SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGS: Freshman RHP Adam Yates set a school record with 31 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings from Feb. 14-25. He made two starts during that time against SE Louisiana on Feb. 14, and Austin Peay, on Feb. 21, recording 13 2/3 scoreless frames. Yates tossed a complete-game, seven-inning one hitter in his start versus the Lions on Feb. 14.
REBELS BREAK ROAD SWEEP DROUGHT: Ole Miss' three-game sweep of Auburn at Plainsman Park, Mar. 16-18, marked the Rebels' first three-game road sweep of an opponent -- SEC or non-conference -- since taking three games from Kentucky, Apr. 19-20, 1986 in Lexington. Prior to the Auburn series, Ole Miss had played 62 three-game road series, including 59 inside the SEC, without a three-game sweep.
REBELS RECORD BACK-TO-BACK SWEEPS: Ole Miss' three-game sweep of Alabama, Mar. 23-25 in Oxford, marked the first time since 1972 the Rebels had recorded back-to-back SEC sweeps. Ole Miss swept three games from Auburn the previous weekend at Plainsman Park, Mar. 16-18. It was also Ole Miss' first sweep of the Crimson Tide since 1979. The sweeps of the Crimson Tide and Tigers marked the first time since 1979 that Ole Miss had swept both Alabama schools in the same season, and the first time since 1994 that the Rebels had won an SEC series against the two Alabama schools during the same campaign.
REBELS SWEEP THREE SEC SERIES FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1972: In addition to its three-game SEC sweeps of Auburn, Mar. 16-18 in Auburn, an Alabama, Mar. 23-25 in Oxford, Ole Miss also swept Florida in a three-game series, Apr. 20-22 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, to record three SEC series sweeps in the same season since 1972. Ole Miss swept four SEC series in 1972 against LSU, Alabama and Mississippi State twice. The Rebels missed a chance to record their fourth SEC sweep of 2001, when Vanderbilt defeated Ole Miss 7-3 on Apr. 29 in Nashville, to salvage the final game of the series.
DIAMOND NOTES
* Ole Miss turned its first triple play since May 29, 1999 when the Rebels turned the feat against LSU in the sixth inning in an SEC Tournament game on May 17. With runners on first and second, senior 3B Lance Jones snagged a line drive off the bat of Wally Pontiff. He then stepped on third to double off David Raymer before firing over to first to beat Ryan Theriot back to the bag.
* Junior 1B Josh Christian became the first Ole Miss player since Kary Bridges in 1993 to record five hits in a game when he went 5-for-5 against LSU on May 19 at the SEC Tournament. Two of his hits were home runs to tie a SEC Tournament single-game record, and finish with a season-high four RBIs. Bridges recorded his five-hit game versus Auburn on May 2, 1993.
* The Rebels were 30-1 (.968) this season when holding the lead after eight innings of play. The only defeat was a 5-4 loss to Tennessee on May 4, when the Volunteers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth. In last two seasons, Ole Miss posted a 58-2 (.967 winning percentage) mark when holding the lead going into the ninth.
* With 648 hits this season, Ole Miss finished 10 shy of the school record of 658 set by the 1999 team.
* The Rebels were 17 RBIs shy of the school record of 401 set in 1998 and were 24 walks shy of tying the school record for the most walks drawn in a season set by the 1977 squad with 293.
* Ole Miss played the longest game in school history with a 17-inning game against Arizona that lasted 5 hours and 4 minutes and was played over the course of Mar. 3 and 4. The game was halted in the 12 inning on Mar. 3 due to rain with the score tied 4-4. Sophomore Evan Conley delivered the game-winning hit with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the 17th.
