OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss baseball signed switch-hitting catcher Barry Gunther, from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Westminster Academy, to a national letter of intent to play baseball for the Rebels, head coach Mike Bianco announced Thursday. He will be eligible during the 2001-2002 academic year.

Gunter, 6-feet-0, 195 pounds, was a two-time All-State and All-County selection while earning four varsity letters. This past spring he was a pre-season All-America and posted a .411 batting average with four home runs and 55 RBIs. He helped lead Westminster to a district championship before losing in the regional finals.

"Barry is a switch-hitting catcher that is very strong in all phases of the game," Bianco said. "He comes from a very fine program at Westminster Academy and we're excited that Barry has decided to continue his playing and academic career at Ole Miss."

Ole Miss went 39-23-1 this past spring in Bianco's first season as head coach. The Rebels tied a school record with 17 SEC wins, as they tied for second in the SEC Western Division and earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals.
