OXFORD, Miss. - First baseman Dustin Cliburn, of Meridian Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Ole Miss, head coach Mike Bianco announced Monday. Cliburn will be eligible for the upcoming 2001-2002 academic year.
Cliburn, 6-feet-1, 220 pounds, from Jackson, Miss., was a two-time all-conference selection at Meridian, posting a two-year batting average of .322 with 26 home runs and 104 runs batted in. This past spring, he hit .348 with 16 HRs and 60 RBIs.
"Dustin was a terrific player at Meridian and should be a good fit into our system here," Bianco said. "He adds depth to our first base position and we're looking forward to having him be part of our program."
Cliburn prepped at Hillcrest Christian where he was a 1999 first-team all-state performer. He hit .396 in his two-year varsity career, belting 18 HRs and driving in 104 runs. He also helped Hillcrest Christian to a Mississippi 4A state championship.
The Rebels went 39-23-1 last spring in Bianco's first season with Ole Miss, and advanced to the NCAA Regionals.
