Men's Tennis Defeats Louisiana-Monroe 5-2

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 5 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team defeated the University of Louisiana-Monroe 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center, in its final tuneup for the Mississippi Cup.
For the second straight match, the Rebels (2-0) dominated in doubles play winning all three matches. The senior duo of Kristofer Stahlberg and Martin Selin have only lost one game in two doubles matches this spring.
Ole Miss proved too much at the top two spots in singles losing only one game. Junior All-American Alex Hartman didn't allow his opponent, Paul Newman, a single game (6-0, 6-0), and Stahlberg won 6-1, 6-0 over Silviou Tanasoiu at No. 2 singles to make it 3-0 Rebels.
Louisiana-Monroe's Bart Dabrowski gave the Indians their first point of the day, when he defeated Rebel sophomore Paul Ciorascu 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. With the score 3-1, freshman Claes Lindholm wrapped up a 6-0, 6-1 victory against ULM's Jan Steenekamp at No. 5 singles, to clinch the win.
Selin beat Mark Edney 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to finish off the Rebel scoring, while Stanley Nevolovich defeated Rebel Mason Cousins 6-4, 4-6, 8-6 at the No. 6 spot for the Indians only other point.
The Rebels will now get ready to take on the 14th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs Thursday night in Jackson at the fifth annual River Hills Mississippi Cup. The two teams have split the previous four meetings, with Ole Miss winning the last two, including last year's 4-1 victory. The Rebels have won seven in a row over the Bulldogs, but head coach Billy Chadwick expects it to be another exciting match.
"Mississippi State has another very good team," Chadwick said. "Both teams have a nice fan base in Jackson, so it's always nice to be able to showcase great college tennis in a great atmosphere. We are looking forward to the challenge."
The match will begin at 5 p.m. at the River Hills Tennis Club and includes food and drinks. Fans can purchase tickets ahead of time, by calling (601) 987-4438 or at the door.
