Ole Miss Track And Field Teams Sweep Arkansas State Meet

JONESBORO, Ark. - Ole Miss' Kendrick Triggs set a meet record in the 200 meters to lead the Rebels to a first-place finish at the Arkansas State Kick-off Klassic late Sunday. The Lady Rebels also placed first in their competition, with Chiquita Stephens leading the way with two-first place finishes in the 55 and 200 meters.
The Ole Miss men's squad won the compeition with 151 points, followed by Memphis in second with 85 points and Arkansas State third with 71. On the women's side, Ole Miss won with 152 ? points. Arkansas State was second with 95 points and Memphis third with 75.
Triggs won the 200 meters in a time of 21.27 seconds, which broke the previous meet record of 21.72 set by Memphis' Larry Crawford in 1999. Triggs' time also set a new Arkansas State Convocation record, breaking the previous record of 21.38 by Louisiana Tech's Kevin Loyd in 1988. Triggs also placed third in the 55-meters with a time of 6.35 seconds.
Other first-place finishers for the Rebels were James Shelton in the 55-meters (6.32), Shantel Glass in the long jump (23-0 ?), Stacy Andrews in the 35-pound weight throw (60-1), Antwon Hicks in the high jump (6-8) and Clinton Fletcher in the 400-meters (49.02).
Stephens led the Lady Rebels with first-place finishes in the 55 meters (7.07) and 200 meters (24.79). Brandie Plyler recorded Ole Miss' only other first-place showing, winning the pole vault with a mark of 11-0.
Other top performers for the Lady Rebels were Octavia Barnes, second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.35); Willisa Heinz, second in the 55-meters (7.07); Keisa Bass and Carter, second in the high jump (5-6); and Bass, second in the long jump (18-1 ?).
The Ole Miss track and field teams return to action Jan. 18 at the SEC Five-Way meet in Fayetteville, Ark.
