MONROE, La. -- Freshman right fielder Seth Smith went 3-for-6 with two home runs and six RBIs to lead No. 10 Ole Miss to a 13-6 win over Louisiana-Monroe in front of 1,675 at Indian Field Wednesday night.
Smith's first home run was a two-run shot in the first to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead, and he later capped the game's scoring with a three-run shot in the ninth.
Ole Miss (13-3) took advantage of a two-out error in the sixth to score four unearned runs and break a 4-4 tie. Junior left fielder Drew Rogers' two-run single scored Burney Hutchinson and Smith to give the Rebels a 6-4 lead, and a batter later, junior first baseman Bryce Morrison added a two-run triple to make it 8-4.
Al Simontis (2-0) pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, allowing one hit and one walk after coming on for starter T.J. Beam in the second.
Hutchinson finished 3-for-5 at the plate as Ole Miss out-hit Louisiana-Monroe 15-8.
The Indians (5-12) scored three runs in the second to take a 4-3 lead. Kade Eady hit a two-run triple to tie the game at 3-3, and Andy Chance followed with a single to score Eady, giving ULM a 4-3 lead and chase Beam.
Smith tied the game in the fourth with a two-out single to score Hutchinson.
Ole Miss will next open Southeastern Conference play Friday night with the first game of a three-game series at No. 6 Florida. Game time is 5:30 p.m., at McKethan Stadium.
