REBEL GAME NOTES
AT A GLANCE: No. 8 Ole Miss (27-8, 8-5 SEC) looks to even this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series with No. 22 Auburn (25-11, 7-6 SEC) when the two teams meet today at 3:06 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The game will be televised by FOX Sports Net with Dave Neal, calling the play-by-play and Larry Conley providing color analysis. Today's game will also be carried on stations along the Ole Miss Radio Network beginning at 2:45 p.m., with David Kellum and Gary Darby. The Tigers won 10-3 last night in the series opener to snap Ole Miss' 12-game win streak. Senior right-hander Pete Montrenes (7-2, 3.96) will draw the start today for the Rebels. He will be opposed by Auburn junior right-hander Levale Speigner (6-3, 3.88).
LAST TIME OUT: Bobby Huddleston went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs, and sophomore right-hander Colby Paxton pitched a complete game to lead Auburn to a 10-3 win over No. 8 Ole Miss last night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. After Auburn tied the game at 1-1 in the third, a two-out error put runners on first and second and set-up Huddleston's three-run blast. Chuck Jeroloman added a two-run blast in the fourth to make it 6-1, and Scott Schade hit a lead-off home run in the sixth to key a four-run inning to make it 10-1. Paxton allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk, and struck out four to earn the win. Junior right-hander J.R. Pickens was charged with the loss, allowing 10 runs, four earned, on 11 hits and one walk, and struck out four in 5 2/3 innings.
REBELS TO HOST INDIANS ON TUESDAY: Ole Miss will complete a nine-game home stand Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m., when the Rebels host Arkansas State. The ticket for Arkansas State was misprinted with the date April 30.
IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss is ranked as high as No. 8 in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association poll, up four spots from last week. The Rebels are No. 9 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30, No. 13 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Top 25, and No. 15 in the Baseball America Top 25 ... Auburn is ranked No. 22 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Top 25.
REBELS VS. TIGERS: Today's game marks the 122nd meeting all-time between Ole Miss and Auburn ... The Tigers hold a 62-59-1 advantage in the series ... Ole Miss is 3-1-1 in SEC series against Auburn since 1997 ... The two teams split a rain-shortened two-game series in Oxford in 1998 ... Last night's win by Auburn snapped a four-game losing streak to the Rebels ... Ole Miss swept Auburn last year in Auburn to mark the Rebels' first sweep on the Plains since 1983 ... Prior to last year, Ole Miss' last sweep against Auburn was in 1985 when they swept a two-game series in Oxford ... The Rebels are 35-26-1 against the Tigers in Oxford, 24-34 in Auburn, and 0-2 at neutral sites.
AFTER 35 GAMES LAST SEASON: The Rebels were 25-9-1 after 35 games last season ... Ole Miss was hitting .299 (354x1,182) with 57 doubles, 13 triples, 31 home runs and 201 RBIs ... The Rebels stole 26 bases in 39 attempts and grounded into 29 double plays ... They were outscoring their opponents 235-165 ... REBEL MISCELLANEOUS:
* In addition to snapping Ole Miss' 12-game win streak, last night's loss snapped an eight-game home win streak for the Rebels, the longest streak since Ole Miss won 11 straight home games in 1999.
* The 12-game win streak by Ole Miss was the longest since the Rebels won 15 straight in 1964, and was the fourth-longest in school history.
* Last night's loss also halted the Rebels' seven-game SEC win streak.
* The Rebels have lost 15 straight SEC series when losing the series opener. The last time Ole Miss lost a series opener and rebounded to win the back two games was against LSU in Oxford on the final weekend of the 1998 season.
* The 10 runs by Auburn last night marked the first time in 16 games, since Florida, scored 17 that the Rebels allowed 10 or more runs.
* The Tigers belted three home runs last night after Ole Miss pitching had allowed just three in the 15 previous games entering Friday night.
* The 2-hour, 15-minute game last night was the Rebels' shortest nine-inning game of the season, and the shortest regulation contest since a 2:01 contest versus Louisiana-Monroe last year on April 25 in Oxford.
