OXFORD, Miss. - No. 6 Ole Miss made three first-inning runs hold up as the Rebels downed UT-Martin 3-1 Tuesday night in front of 1,861 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

The Rebels (33-9) scored three runs on four hits off Skyhawk starter Jason Venczel, but would manage just one hit the rest of the night off Venczel.

Chad Sterbens' plated the game's first runs with a two-run bases loaded single to score Jonathan Swearingen and Seth Smith. Ole Miss scored its third run when Bryce Morrison singled to right and right fielder Kelly Davis bobbled the ball to allow Drew Rogers to score.

Senior left-hander Mike Gray (3-0), the first of five Rebel pitchers on the night, pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks and was declared the pitcher of record.

The five Ole Miss hurlers combined to hold the Skyhawks (13-26) to three hits and two walks, while striking out 10.

UT-Martin scored its run in the fifth when Brian Jordan tripled to left center and Dan Stephens followed with a ground out to second to score Jordan.

Venczel (0-6) would go the distance for the Skyhawks in taking the loss. He was charged with two earned runs on five hits and walked none, while striking out four.

Ole Miss will return to Southeastern Conference action Friday night when the Rebels open a three-game series with Tennessee at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
