OXFORD, Miss. - Nick Crowe slapped a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to give Tennessee a 6-5 lead and key a four-run inning as the Volunteers took game one of this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series against No. 6 Ole Miss, 8-5 Friday evening in front of 1,757 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

The loss, coupled with Alabama's 8-6 win over Auburn, dropped the Rebels (33-10, 12-7 SEC) to two games behind the Crimson Tide for first place in the SEC Western Division. It was also just Ole Miss' fourth loss in its last 24 games.

Tennessee (22-22, 7-12 SEC) starter Ben Riley (4-2) overcame six errors to hold the Rebels to five runs, only two earned, on 13 hits and five walks, while striking out six. He didn't allow an extra-base hit on the night, and Ole Miss stranded 14 runners on base, including nine in scoring position.

Matt Sternberg and Dennis Gomez opened the eighth with back-to-back singles, and Adam Smith's sac bunt moved the runners to second and third. T.J. Beam then came on in relief for Al Simontis and struck out Chad LeGate for the second out of the inning. Crowe then stuck his bat out on a 1-2 fastball from Beam to knock a double past third baseman Jonathan Swearingen and score Sternberg and Gomez to put the Volunteers up 6-5.

Tennessee would add two more runs in the inning on Jordan Czarniecki's double to score Crowe, and Czarniecki would then score on Walter Sevilla's single to right.

Simontis (4-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on four hits.

Beam was charged with two runs on three hits and struck out two in blowing his first save in six opportunities this season.

Jeffery Terrell recorded the final two outs in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.

Sevilla and Brandon Hopkins recorded three hits each to lead Tennessee at the plate. Czarniecki went 2-for-5 and hit his seventh home run of the season with a solo shot in the first to make it 1-0.

Gomez also homered for Tennessee, hitting a 412-foot blast to right center in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.

Josh Christian went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Rebels.

Both teams recorded 13 hits on the night.

The win marked Tennessee's 15th over the Rebels in the last 19 meetings between the two teams since 1992.

Game two of the series will be Saturday at 4 p.m. Terrell (3-6, 4.14), a junior left-hander, is scheduled to start for Tennessee, while senior right-hander Pete Montrenes (8-3, 4.71) is slated to pitch for the Rebels.
