OXFORD, Miss. - Tennessee touched Ole Miss starter Pete Montrenes for nine runs during the first three innings as the Volunteers rolled to a 14-6 win over No. 6 Ole Miss Saturday afternoon in front of 4,084 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The win secured the series win for the Volunteers, after they won Friday's series opener 8-5, and moved them over the .500-mark for the first time this season at 23-22 overall, 8-12 in the SEC.
The loss snapped the Rebels' string of five consecutive SEC series wins and dropped Ole Miss (33-11, 12-8 SEC) three games behind Alabama for first place in the SEC Western Division, as the Crimson Tide won 6-5 over Auburn on a two-run walk-off home run by Brent Boyd in Tuscaloosa.
Starter Jeffery Terrell (4-6) worked into the eighth inning after pitching 2/3 of an inning to earn the save in Friday's game. He allowed five runs, while scattering 13 hits and walking three to earn the win. He also struck out six.
After scoring a run in the first, Tennessee plated four in the second, highlighted by a two-run triple by Jordan Czarniecki. Two Ole Miss errors led to four more Volunteer runs in the third. Rob Fitzgerald's single to left brought home Brandon Hopkins, and a fielding error by left fielder Clint Farrar also allowed Matt Sternberg to score on the play, making it 7-2 and chasing Montrenes from the game.
Walter Sevilla's two-run single later in the inning off reliever Nick Bradshaw capped the inning and extended the Volunteers' lead to 9-2.
Montrenes (8-4) was charged with nine runs, five earned, on five hits and two walks, and struck out one in suffering the loss.
Hopkins went 3-for-4 with an RBI to pace Tennessee's 15-hit attack, while Sternberg and Sevilla both had three RBIs each.
Seth Smith went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Charlie Waite was 3-for-3 with an RBI as Ole Miss recorded 14 hits. Chad Sterbens went 1-for-4 to extend his SEC hitting streak to 20 games, and to 10 games overall.
Ole Miss will look to avoid the sweep when the two teams conclude the weekend's three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Freshman right-hander Alan Horne (3-1, 4.54) is scheduled to start on the hill for the Rebels, while Tennessee's starter is TBA.
