OXFORD, Miss. - Arkansas scored five runs in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie en route to a 10-8 win over No. 12 Ole Miss and a sweep of the Rebels in this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series Sunday afternoon, in front of 1,912 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The sweep marked the first time that Ole Miss had been swept at home since Tennessee won both games of a rain-shortened series in 2000, and it was the first time the Rebels had been swept in a three-game series at home since 1999 versus South Carolina.
Ole Miss scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 and chase Arkansas starter Layne Berry after facing eight batters.
Junior right-hander Josh Glynn (2-0) relieved Berry and held Ole Miss to one run on six hits and one walk, while striking out three in 5 1/3 innings to earn the win.
Arkansas tied the game with three runs in the top of the second and both teams went scoreless until the seventh.
Scott Bridges and Michael Conner opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Nick Pitts' sac bunt moved runners to second and third. Ryan Fox was then intentionally walked to load the bases and Andrew Wishy followed with a two-run single off reliever Adam Yates to give the Razorbacks a 5-3 lead. Wishy's single was the first of four straight hits by Arkansas as the Razorbacks added three more runs in the inning to build an 8-3 advantage.
Ole Miss starter J.R. Pickens (7-3) would be charged with the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out four in six-plus innings.
Jeff Fletcher gave the Razorbacks some insurance in the ninth with a two-run, pinch-hit home run to make it 10-4.
The Rebels would rally in the ninth plating four runs, highlighted by Burney Hutchinson's two-run blast that made it 10-6. Seth Smith later added a two-run single to make it 10-8, however Kyler Pomeroy coaxed Clint Farrar to bounce to first to end the game.
Ten different Razorbacks recorded at least one hit as Arkansas out-hit Ole Miss 18-12. Wishy led the Razorbacks at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Chad Sterbens went 4-for-5 for the Rebels to extend his SEC hitting streak to 27 games, and to a career-long 17 games overall.
Ole Miss will next travel to Jonesboro, Ark., Monday evening for a 6:30 p.m., contest at Arkansas State. The Rebels will then host McNeese State Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, before concluding the regular season with a three-game series at Mississippi State, starting next Friday at 6:30 p.m.
