May 19, 2002

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Ole Miss track and field teams competed at the Georgia Tech Invitational Saturday for a last chance at qualifying for the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships. While none of the Ole Miss competitors posted improved marks, several of them had strong performances.

The top overall finish for Ole Miss came in the men's 4x100-meter relay. The Rebel team composed of freshmen Chris Lawson and Taye Biddle and sophomores Kendrick Triggs and James Shelton posted the second best time of the day as they combined to run 39.61. While it is not an improvement on their season's best time of 39.58, it is their second fastest time of the season. The quartet has provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet and will find out Monday afternoon if their time is good enough to get into the meet.

Shelton also competed in the 100 meter dash. He finished sixth with a time of 10.51. Also placing in sixth in the 100 meter dash was junior Willisa Heintz on the women's side. Heintz clocked in at 11.56. Junior Stacy Andrews placed sixth in the men's discus throw with a toss of 171-10.

Ole Miss has one automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships in freshman Antwon Hicks. Hicks has automatically qualified for the meet in the 110-meter hurdles as he has the fifth fastest time in the nation with 13.61.

Several Ole Miss athletes have recorded provisional marks and will await word on Monday to see if they have qualified for the NCAA meet which takes place May 29-June 1 on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge, La. The following Ole Miss athletes have provisional marks: Triggs (men's 200 meters), Rebel 4x100-meter relay, Andrews (men's discus), freshman Shantel Glass (men's long jump), freshman Marquita Aldridge (women's long jump) and Heintz (women's 100 meters, 200 meters).
