STARKVILLE, Miss. - One of the most promising seasons in Ole Miss history quickly turned into one of the most disappointing as Matthew Brinson hit two home runs and drove in four runs as Mississippi State completed a three-game sweep of the 16th-ranked Rebels with a 10-5 victory Sunday afternoon in front of 7,227 at Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium.
The loss, coupled with Arkansas' 4-1 win over Auburn in Fayetteville, dropped the Rebels percentage points behind Arkansas for the eighth and final spot to the SEC Tournament, which will begin Wednesday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Birmingham, Ala. Ole Miss finishes the regular season 37-19, but dropped 10 of its last 12 conference games, including six straight, to finish 14-16 in the SEC.
Brinson's first home run, a solo shot in the fourth gave Mississippi State a 1-0 lead. He then added a three-run homer in the fifth to cap a four-run inning as the Bulldogs led 5-0 after five.
Junior right-hander Chris Young (5-1) pitched 7 2/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks, and struck out four.
J.R. Pickens (7-4) suffered the loss as he was charged with four runs on two hits and two hits, while striking out four in 4 2/3 innings.
Eight Rebels recorded at least one hit as Ole Miss out-hit Mississippi State 9-8. Charlie Waite went 2-for-4 and Seth Smith was 1-for-5 to finish the season with a .402 batting average.
Junior shortstop Chad Sterbens was 0-for-5 to have his SEC hitting streak snapped at 29 games. He also had a career-long 21-game streak overall halted, which tied Kary Bridges' school record set in 1992.
Mississippi State (33-22-1, 14-15 SEC) earned the No. 7 seed to the SEC Tournament and will open the event against No. 2 seed Alabama, Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m.
