FRANKLIN, Tenn. - The Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up the Mason Rudolph Collegiate in eighth place with a three day score of 287-287-290-864, while junior Jordan Dempsey tied for ninth overall.
Dempsey paced the team throughout the tournament, finishing one-under-par after the three rounds of competition with a 67-70-72-209. The performance put Dempsey in a tie for ninth, his best finish on the season, while the 67 in the first round ties the lowest single round score of his career.
"We struggled big time today," said head coach Woody Cowart. "Obviously some people played well, but we were never able to really get things going. We had some moments, but we simply weren't able to capitalize and get over that hump. We'll go back to the drawing board and see what we can come up with before our next tournament."
Newcomer Lucas Boyd carded a 72-74-70-216, hitting par on the final day of competition, to tie for 31st-place in the final standings. The Mason Rudolph Collegiate marks the first tournament for Boyd at Ole Miss since transferring from Lon Morris Community College over the summer.
Sophomore Jarrod Gardner finished the competition tied for 40th, with a three day total of 75-70-74-219. Gardner's 40th-place finish put him in a tie with teammate Bryan Kane, who turned in a three-round score of 74-75-70-219, hitting par in the final round. Kane competed as an individual, which meant his score did not count in the final standings for Ole Miss.
Junior Pope Spruiell, who came to Ole Miss from Shelton State Community College, tied for 55th overall with a score of 73-77-74-224, while freshman Jonathan Lenz rounded out the scoring for Ole Miss with a final tally of 75-73-81-229 to finish in 60th.
The Rebels will have two weeks off before playing in their third tournament of the fall season at the Adam's Cup of Newport on Oct. 8-9. The Rebels finished tied for 10th in the Adam's Cup last season.
