Alex Hartman Advances To Semifinals At SEC Indoor Championships

NORCROSS, Ga. - Senior All-American Alex Hartman of the Ole Miss men's tennis team proved the third time is the charm, as he ousted top seed Jesse Witten of Kentucky in the quarterfinals of the SEC Indoor Championships Saturday, to reach the semifinals for the third time in his career. It marked his first win against the 2002 ITA Rookie-of-the-Year in three meetings.
Hartman, seeded No. 7 in the tournament and ranked No. 24 in the nation, defeated Witten, the No. 4 ranked player in the country, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. He will face Vanderbilt's Bobby Reynolds, who defeated Rebel Paul Ciorascu in another quarterfinal match, Sunday at 10 a.m.
In their previous two meetings (2002), Witten won both matches against Hartman. He took the regular season meeting 6-4, 7-6, and then won again in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Championships, 7-6(5), 7-6(3).
Reynolds, the No. 3 seed and third-ranked player, defeated Ciorascu, who came in seeded No. 8, 6-1, 7-5. Ciorascu, ranked No. 18 in the nation, played three three-setters in the tournament and won two tiebreakers on the second day to reach the quarterfinals.
Hartman and Reynolds have only met once, with the Rebel claiming a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles in the 2002 regular season meeting between Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.
Hartman reached the finals of this tournament in 2000 and 2001 and the quarterfinals last year. He is currently 10-3 on the year.
In doubles, Hartman and partner Claes Lindholm lost 8-3 to Chad Harris and Scott Brown of Vanderbilt in the second round.
