OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 8 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team dominated No. 21 South Florida 7-0 Monday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center to begin the 2003 season in style.

The Rebels (1-0) took command early by winning the doubles point and never let up. They won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles and then clinched the point on court two, 8-4. Dating back to last season, the Rebels are 17-0 when winning the doubles point.

Two years ago, senior Alex Hartman lost to 53rd-ranked Paco Antelo in the Rebels dual match against USF, but this time, the result would be a lot different. Hartman, ranked No. 24 in the nation, shutout Antelo 6-0, 6-0 to give the Rebels a 2-0 advantage.

Junior Paul Ciorascu made it 3-0 Ole Miss with a straight set 6-3, 6-1 win over the Bull's outstanding freshman, Juan Barragan at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Catalin Gard clinched the victory with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win against Uli Kiendl at the No. 2 spot.

"This was an excellent job from top to bottom from each team member," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "South Florida is a very good team. Many coaches feel they are a potential top 10 team, so this was a great way to start off the season. I am especially pleased with Hartman's performance, to beat a player he had lost to two years ago, with such domination. We had a great crowd and that really made a huge difference in the match."

Senior Patrick Chucri defeated Jorge Escallon 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, Claes Lindholm beat Renato Silveira 7-6(5), 6-2 on court five, and Karim Alayli finished off Sebastien Niedermayer 6-4, 6-7(6), 1-0(10-7) for the sweep.

Ole Miss will now get ready to face No. 25 Mississippi State in the sixth Mississippi Cup to be played Feb. 13 at the River Hills Tennis Club in Jackson. The match will start at 5 p.m. and there will be food drinks. Fans may order tickets by calling (601) 987-4438. The Rebels have won nine in a row against their arch-rivals.
