Ole Miss Opens Season with Sweep of Jackson State

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team opened its 2003 season with an offensive explosion on Jackson State, outscoring the Lady Tigers 19-1 in a doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon. The Rebels triumphed 11-1 and 8-0, both five-inning mercy rule games, to begin the new season with a 2-0 mark.
In game one, Ole Miss struck early on JSU (0-2), plating five runs in the first inning. Brooke Turner's double opened the rally, and the sophomore from Southaven, Miss., finished the game 3-for-3 with only the second grand slam in Rebel history. Her third-inning homer cleared the bases and provided Ole Miss a 9-0 lead.
Phyllis Manley and Megan Kozar each notched a pair of hits, while DeDe Justice and Julie Baumann collected an RBI apiece. Senior Lindsay Price tossed three perfect innings for the victory, while freshman Dana Brill surrendered only one hit and one run over the final two frames in her first collegiate appearance.
Leslie Day and Brill combined on a two-hit shutout in game two. Day, a senior from Nesbit, Miss., started and worked four innings with seven strikeouts.
Game two also saw Justice move alone atop the UM career home run chart with her 12th as a Rebel. Beginning her sophomore season, Justice belted a two-run shot in the first inning as part of a 2-for-3 performance.
Ole Miss totaled two runs in the first, one in the second and polished off the Lady Tigers with five in the third. Stacy McCommon, a freshman from Amory, Miss., doubled in a pair of scores, while Turner drove in another.
The Rebels continue the new campaign this weekend at the Triple Crown Classic in St. Augustine, Fla. Ole Miss faces off with Kansas and Bethune-Cookman on Friday and UCF on Saturday for beginning tournament play.
The Rebels are next at home Feb. 15-16 for the Rebel/Easton Invitational.
