MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Seth Smith and Drew Rogers both homered to lead Ole Miss to a 5-1 win over Memphis Wednesday evening in front of 2,821 at AutoZone Park, the home of the AAA Memphis Redbirds.
Smith hit his second home run of the year with a two-out solo shot in the first to put the Rebels up 1-0. Rogers followed with a one-out solo shot in the second, his first of the season, to make it 2-0.
Ole Miss (10-6) added another run in the third when Matt Tolbert, who reached on a lead-off single, scored on Chad Sterbens' sac fly to center.
Redshirt freshman right-hander Anthony Cupps (1-0) made the three early runs stand as he carried a shutout into the sixth inning to earn his first career win. Cupps finished allowing one unearned run on four hits and no walks, and struck out three in six innings.
Memphis (4-8) scored its run in the sixth on a throwing error by Sterbens after Michael Lewis hit a fly ball to right. Sterbens cut off right fielder Brian Pettway's throw to third to try and double off Chad House at first. However, Sterbens' throw got away from first baseman Stephen Head, allowing House to advance to second and Kyle Sledd to score from third after moving up from second on the fly ball.
Sterbens added two insurance runs for the Rebels in the ninth with a two-out single to center that scored Charlie Waite and Matt Tolbert to make it 5-1.
Freshman left-hander Brae Wright worked three perfect innings of relief for Cupps to earn his first career save.
Tiger starter Bill Edwards (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work.
Ole Miss out-hit Memphis 9-4 on the evening with Pettway and Tolbert recording two hits each. Sterbens was 1-for-4 with three runs batted in.
