FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Lindsay Price continued her hot pitching in leading the Ole Miss softball team to a doubleheader split with Arkansas Wednesday in the Rebels' Southeastern Conference opener. Ole Miss took game one, 3-2, and dropped game two, 4-1.

In the early game, the Rebels (9-12, 1-1 SEC) jumped out to a quick lead with a three-run second inning. Desiree Layman led off with a double and reached home on a Jordan Chitwood RBI-single. With two outs, a Brooke Turner walk and Jenny Cox baseknock loaded the bags for DeDe Justice, who chased in two more runs on a bloop-single to shallow centerfield.

The Lady 'Backs (12-13, 1-4 SEC) narrowed the Ole Miss advantage to one in the fourth, off a Ruth Atkins RBI-sacrifice fly and a Julie Young run-scoring single.

However, Price (6-4) would hold Arkansas hitless over the final three innings in notching the complete-game victory. The senior from Terry, Miss., surrendered only three hits total with five strikeouts in winning her fifth straight start.

The Rebels registered their first victory in five chances all-time against Razorback junior righthander Heather Schlichtman (4-5), who went the full seven innings in the loss.

The Rebels improved to 4-3 in SEC openers.

Arkansas rebounded to take the nightcap on the strength of a Lauren Hendrix home run. The Lady 'Backs picked up a run in the third off a Young RBI-double and two more off Hendrix's fourth-inning round-tripper. Young drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Ole Miss got on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth, but the four-hit rally ended with the bases loaded. Rebecca McIntire singled home the lone run, as the freshman from Chatsworth, Calif., extended her hit streak to nine games.

Rebel starter Leslie Day (3-3) suffered her third straight loss on the mound, working five innings before giving way to Dana Brill in the sixth. Valanna Lyons (5-5) scattered seven hits in the UA victory.

For Ole Miss, Cox collected four hits in the twin bill, while Justice had three to go with two RBI.

The finale of the three-game set is Thursday at 5 p.m. CST at Lady 'Back Yard. The Rebels have never taken a season series from Arkansas.
