McNeese State Edges Ole Miss 9-8

OXFORD, Miss. - Ran Prince scored on a passed ball in the top of the ninth inning to break an 8-8 tie and lift McNeese State to a 9-8 victory over Ole Miss Tuesday evening at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The loss snapped the Rebels' (6-4) four-game win streak.
Trailing 8-4, Ole Miss scored two runs in the seventh and freshman Stephen Head delivered a two-run single in the eighth to tie game at 8-8.
Sophomore right-hander Alan Horne (2-2) then came on in relief in the ninth and issued a lead-off walk to Prince. Pinch-hitter Derek Bordelon followed with a hit-and-run single through the left side to advance Prince to third. Prince then scored two pitches later when a 1-0 pitch to Tommy Eubanks got away from catcher Charlie Waite.
Horne (2-2) was charged the loss, allowing the one unearned run on one hit and two walks.
Junior right-hander Rhett Gulledge (2-1), the fourth Cowboy pitcher of the night, pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.
Ole Miss out-hit McNeese State (10-6) 17-8 on the night as 10 different Rebels recorded a hit. Senior third baseman Jonathan Swearingen and Waite both had three hits. Swearingen also hit first home run of season with a first-pitch, lead-off homer in the bottom of the first inning.
Swearingen's home run sparked a three-run first inning as Ole Miss led 4-0 lead after two innings. The Cowboys then rallied for two runs in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead.
First baseman Tim Lemke went 2-for-4 to lead McNeese State at the plate and Prince was 1-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the fifth to put the Cowboys ahead 5-4.
The two teams will conclude the two-game midweek series Wednesday with a 4 p.m., afternoon game at Swayze Field.
