McNeese State Trips Ole Miss Again In The Ninth

OXFORD, Miss.-- John Anderson's sacrifice fly to center in the top of the ninth inning to score Dustin Smith lifted McNeese State to a 4-3 win over Ole Miss Wednesday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field and gave the Cowboys a sweep of the two-game midweek series.
Smith doubled to right center to lead off the ninth and advanced to third on Dooley Prince's fly ball to right field. Anderson then lined a 1-0 pitch from freshman left-hander Stephen Head to center and Smith beat center fielder Matt Mossberg's throw home to score the winning run.
Rhett Gulledge (3-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless inning to earn the win in relief for the second straight day.
Head (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits and one walk, and struck out one in 2 1/3 innings of relief to suffer the loss.
Ole Miss starter Anthony Cupps pitched 6 2/3 solid innings in his first career start. He was charged with two runs on six hits and two walks, and struck out two.
Junior right fielder Charlie Babineaux gave Ole Miss a 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run in the third, his first homer of the season.
McNeese State took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Tim Lemke's RBI single scored Ran Prince to tie the game at 1-1 and Tommy Eubanks scored on a ground out to first by Brian Bernhardt.
Jonathan Swearingen's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth tied game at 2-2 and Ole Miss took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on Chad Sterbens' two-out RBI single.
The Cowboys tied the game in the top of the eighth on Eubanks' triple to right center that scored Derek Bordelon.
Swearingen went 2-for-5 to lead Ole Miss at the plate, and Dooley Prince was 2-for-5 for McNeese State as both teams recorded nine hits each.
McNeese State starter Jacob Marceaux worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks. He also struck out one.
Ole Miss will continue its nine-game homestand with a three-game series against New York Tech, beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
