OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 8 ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team needed only an hour and a half to win its eighth match of the year, downing Arkansas-Little Rock 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. With the win, the Rebels improved to 8-2, while UALR dropped to 5-4.
The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 28 but was postponed due to travel problems related to inclement weather. It didn't take long for the Rebels to jump on the Trojans, claiming victories at the top two spots within seconds of each other.
Senior Alex Hartman downed the Trojan's Alexei Poutchinets 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to inch closer to a milestone. He needs four wins to reach 100 for his career. The win also improved his dual match record to 8-2 at the top spot. Sophomore Catalin Gard snapped a two-match losing streak with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Juan Carlos Baca at No. 2 singles. That made it 2-0 Rebels.
Patrick Chucri gave Ole Miss a 3-0 advantage, while also ending a two-match skid, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory against UALR's Dave Baxedine on court five. He ran his record to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in dual matches.
Claes Lindholm defeated Mithun Murali 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to clinch the win for the second straight match. He trailed 0-3 in the first set, but won nine consecutive games on his way to the victory. With the win, Lindholm remained undefeated in dual matches for 2003 at 8-0 and brought his lifetime dual match record to 30-2. He has now won 17 straight dual matches dating back to last season.
On court six, Karim Alayli started off down 0-3 against Mark Edney, but won six straight games to win the first set 6-3 and cruised to take the second 6-1 as the Rebels increased their lead to 5-0. UALR's only point of the day came at No. 3 singles, where Sebastian Falk upset 28th-ranked Paul Ciorascu 7-5, 6-3.
The Rebels swept the doubles matches to make it 6-1. The top two positions are a combined 18-2 in dual matches for Ole Miss.
Ole Miss returns to the courts Sunday to host 22nd-ranked Ohio State at 1 p.m.
