PLANT CITY, Fla. - DeDe Justice drove in three runs in leading Ole Miss to a 5-2 softball win over Central Michigan and a split of two games on Friday. The Rebels (6-9) also fell to Temple, 5-3, in day two of the Speedline Invitational.
With the Rebels trailing 2-0 to CMU in the second inning, Justice put Ole Miss on the scoreboard with an RBI-double. She was chased home by a Mandy Ott single to tie the game.
Justice, a sophomore from Vero Beach, Fla., put the Rebels ahead, 3-2, with her third home run of the season in the fifth inning, and she padded the UM lead with an RBI-sacrifice fly in the sixth. Justice finished 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
Fellow sophomore Brooke Turner batted 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, including a steal of home in the sixth inning. Desiree Layman collected two hits.
Lindsay Price (4-4) won her third straight start and turned in her team-high sixth complete game. The senior from Terry, Miss., scattered six hits and struck out seven. Jenni Rasmussen (1-3) went four innings in the loss for the Chippewas (6-6).
In the early game, Rebecca McIntire gave Ole Miss a 2-1 lead over Temple heading into the fifth inning, but the Rebels could not hold on. McIntire, a freshman from Chatsworth, Calif., ripped a two-out RBI-single in the first inning and did it again in the third. She has five two-out RBI in four tournament games.
However, the Owls (3-5) managed four runs in the fifth, using an Ole Miss fielding error, three walks and three singles, to secure the victory. The Rebels could respond with only one run in the bottom of the fifth, off a Justice RBI-sac fly.
Dana Brill (0-4) suffered her third straight complete-game loss, although all five runs allowed were unearned. TU's Vicky Grasham worked the final four innings in the win.
Ole Miss, who is 2-2 in the Speedline Invitational, needs a victory over Pacific Saturday at noon ET to enter tournament bracket play, which runs Saturday afternoon and Sunday at the Plant City Softball Stadium.
