JACKSON, Miss. - Ole Miss snapped a six-game losing streak to No. 5 Mississippi State, and halted the Bulldogs' nine-game win streak, with a 5-1 victory Wednesday night in front of 5,689 at Smith-Wills Stadium, in the 24th edition of the Entergy Mayor's Trophy game.
Three freshmen Rebel pitchers combined to limit Mississippi State (23-4-1) to one run on seven hits while walking none.
Freshman left-hander Brae Wright (2-1) worked six innings, allowing one run on five hits to earn the win.
Redshirt freshman right-hander Anthony Cupps pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for Wright and true freshman left-hander Stephen Head coaxed Jeff Butts to ground out to second to end the game and record his fifth save of the year.
Ole Miss (18-10) broke open a 2-1 game with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by senior catcher Charlie Waite's two-run double with the bases loaded.
Brian Corley (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing two run on five hits and four walks in four innings of work.
Ole Miss out-hit Mississippi State 11-7 on the evening. Jonathan Swearingen, Seth Smith and Waite all had two hits each for the Rebels.
With the win, the Rebels have now won four of the last five Mayor's Trophy games. Ole Miss also last year's game 8-4. Mississippi State still holds a 13-11 advantage in the series.
The Rebels will return to action Friday evening at 6 p.m., when they open a three-game series at Tennessee.
