OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss head baseball coach Mike Bianco announced Thursday that he has selected Stuart Lake, from the College of Charleston, to fill the position of assistant baseball coach. Lake's appointment is pending approval of the Board of Trustees, State Institutions of Higher Learning.
Lake replaces Clint Carver, who resigned to purse other opportunities, and will serve as the Rebels' hitting instructor and third base coach. He will also coach the outfielders.
Lake has five years of coaching experience on the collegiate level. Last spring was his first season at the College of Charleston after spending four years from 1999-2002 at South Carolina.
"We're excited about having Stuart join our coaching staff," Bianco said. "We had over 50 qualified applicants for this position, but his extensive experience working with hitters at both South Carolina and the College of Charleston made him stand out. We feel Stuart is the right person to help lead our offense."
With the Cougars, Lake served as third base coach and hitting instructor, and also coached the outfielders. The College of Charleston went 31-27 this past season, including posting a 17-13 mark in the Southern Conference. The Cougars hit .300 as a team, led by second baseman Lee Curtis' .399 average. The two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year was drafted in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox during this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
At South Carolina, Lake served as assistant camp coordinator and helped coordinate on-campus recruiting. During his time in Columbia, the Gamecocks put together four recruiting classes that ranked in the top 12 in the country.
A 1994 graduate of Charleston Southern, Lake, 31, played two seasons for the Buccaneers from 1993-1994. He entered the coaching ranks in 1996 as an assistant baseball coach at high school alma mater, Mid-Carolina High School, in Prosperity, S.C. He then spent two seasons at Brookland-Cayce High School from 1997-1998 before joining Ray Tanner's staff at South Carolina.
Ole Miss is coming off a 35-27 campaign that saw the Rebels earn their second NCAA Tournament berth in three years under Bianco.
