OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss celebrated Senior Night with its biggest offensive output of the SEC soccer season, pounding Kentucky 5-1 Friday night highlighted by a Brittney Potts hat trick.
The Rebels' trio of Kentucky natives also pitched in on the attack. Hillary Beckman tallied a career-high three assists, while senior sister Lindley added another. Senior Kristal Menard also connected on her second goal of the year.
After being honored with the senior class in pre-game ceremonies, Lindley Beckman set up the opening score in the 26th minute with a long pass ahead to Kelly Renie, who beat the defender and cracked a 13-yard goal for her sixth of the season. An All-SEC forward from Carmel, Ind., Renie also picked up a pair of assists against UK.
Just over a minute after the Renie score, Potts netted her first goal of the evening with a 20-yard rocket after good passing from Hillary Beckman and senior Leigh Barrow. After the Wildcats (6-9-1, 3-5-1 SEC) narrowed the gap to 2-1 by halftime on a Callie Lanphier score, Potts, who was battling food poisoning prior to gametime, quickly put the match away. The first five minutes of the second stanza saw the sophomore from Franklin, Tenn., rip a 15-yard goal and follow up with a successful header in the box. It marked Potts' first career hat trick and ran her season goal total to a team-high 10.
Ole Miss (8-8-1, 4-4-1 SEC) finished with an 18-6 shot advantage and posted its most goals since the season-opening 7-0 whipping of Northwestern State.
"We came out very motivated on Senior Night, but we wanted them to take all their emotions and turn it into positive energy and focus on the game at hand," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We had talked about where we were in the SEC. We knew we controlled our own destiny, and we were tied with Kentucky in the standings. We knew Kentucky was a very good team, and we had to come out and play our best. We did that tonight."
Riding a three-game unbeaten streak, the Rebels pull back to the .500 mark and remain sixth in the SEC Tournament race. Vanderbilt occupies the fourth spot and will host Ole Miss Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT. The Commodores (5-6-4, 4-2-3 SEC) beat up Mississippi State 4-1 Friday in Starkville.
"We walk away from tonight's game with a lot of confidence," Holeman said. "Vanderbilt is a very talented team, and we need this conference win. We've been playing our best soccer these last couple weeks, and we need to continue to do that to compete against Vanderbilt."
