OXFORD, Miss. - Senior shortstop Matt Tolbert went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and sophomore left-hander Eric Fowler worked 6 1/3 scoreless innings to lead No. 18 (Baseball America) Ole Miss to a 5-2 win over Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon, in front of 2,116 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. With the win, the Rebels (3-0) swept the weekend series from the Panthers (0-3).
Tolbert gave Ole Miss a 1-0 lead in the third with a two-out single to score freshman center fielder Alex Presley, who singled to start the inning. Tolbert later gave the Rebels some insurance runs with a two-run single in the eighth to make it 5-2.
Fowler (1-0) earned the win, allowing three hits and two walks, while striking out one.
Sophomore right-hander Anthony Cupps worked 2 2/3 innings to earn his first save of the year. He allowed two runs on one hit and one walk, while striking out three.
Junior right-hander Josh Britnell (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He also recorded five strikeouts.
Junior right fielder Seth Smith and freshman center fielder Alex Presley also went 3-for-4 at the plate as Ole Miss out-hit Birmingham-Southern 13-4.
The Rebels will conclude a four-game home stand to open the season Wednesday afternoon against Murray State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
